Organizing a union means talking to your coworkers about coming together to build power. Building power makes our union stronger and better able to deliver improvements to our working conditions.

This weekend, Nevada State Employees came together for a one-day training designed to give them the knowledge and tools needed to build a strong, active and effective workplace leaders. The training gave the stewards practical methods to represent and mobilize workers as well as a breakdown of how securing collective bargaining rights can improve the wages, benefits and working conditions for state employees.

Forensic Specialists throughout the state of Nevada are demanding solutions to ensure worker safety and fair pay.

These forensic specialists have recently started a campaign to secure pay equity similar to Correction Officers. Forensic Specialists receive the same skills/training and face similar threats as Correction Officers in order to do the jobs they love. Because of this, AFSCME members delivered a petition to shift supervisors with roughly 90% of all Forensic Specialists statewide to make our voices heard.

New Benefit for Members: Public Safety Protection Program!

The Supreme Court is a fundamental pillar of our democracy and exists to protect the rights and freedoms of everyone. However, our judicial system has become a weapon of powerful, corporate interests to strip working people of their rights to organize, to be safe at work and to receive equal justice under the law. For years, corporate interest groups have put millions of dollars into lobbying senators to confirm judges who will do their bidding on the bench.

Carson City, Nevada – Correction Officers from AFSCME Local 4041 in Nevada are calling on the Nevada Department of Corrections, (NDOC) administrators to immediately address understaffing and cease hiring staff that are not adequately trained to keep inmates and the public safe, in light of the crisis situation occurring in NDOC right now.

The Nevada state Legislature this week approved Gov. Brian Sandoval’s budget, which includes the first wage increases for state workers since 2007. 

AFSCME Local 4041 members were rewarded for their steadfast advocacy with the 3 percent raise over two years. Their last wage increase was offset by retirement and health benefits premiums.

Our state employees union, Local 4041, has long advocated for reduced healthcare rates and improved benefits.

Our voices have been heard! On March 22, 2018, the Public Employees' Benefits Program (PEBP) Board has voted to reduce all covered state and retirees healthcare premiums for the first time since 2011.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders lashed out at the Trump administration after President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders to make it easier to fire federal workers and weaken their unions.
