This week our AFSCME Local 4041 Bargaining Team is in Carson City negotiating wages for our next contract. While this contract will only cover workers who are in certified bargaining units, what we accomplish at the bargaining table will affect wages for all state employees. Recently, Governor Steve Sisolak announced a $50 million dollar investment in childcare to help more working families across Nevada find the childcare they need. This investment expands access and eligibility for childcare assistance to more families.

“I wanted to serve on the PEBP Board as it is my passion to do what I can to make a difference in the healthcare coverage for state employees. I’m hoping to influence PEBP Board members to best benefit healthcare for state employees, especially those who struggle to even afford to use their healthcare benefits,” said Janell.
In response to the Governor’s proposal to include back pay for state employees in the 2023 budget for furlough days taken in 2021, AFSCME Local 4041 released the following statement from Harry Schiffman, President, AFSCME Local 4041, and electrician at UNLV: “The Governor and Interim Finance Committee can and should use American Rescue Plan funds to reimburse state employees for furlough days now, not in next year’s budget.
“Today is a huge victory for Nevada state employees. We appreciate the members of the Board of Examiners for respecting our contract and investing in Nevada state employees. Having a collective bargaining agreement allows us to make improvements to our lives, working conditions and the services our dedicated state employees provide to our communities. Workers in other bargaining units continue to organize towards unit certification as AFSCME Local 4041 so all workers can benefit from a strong contract,” said Harry Schiffman, president of AFSCME Local 4041 and an electrician at UNLV.
